A biography of Alan Villiers, one of the last great sailing ship seamen and one of the most significant maritime writers of the 20th century. Written by Kate Lance and published in 2009.
Villiers was based in Tasmania for a formative part of his career. He worked as a journalist at the Hobart Mercury, and it was from Hobart that he joined a Norwegian whaling fleet bound for Antarctica as a reporter — an experience that became his book Whaling in the Frozen South. He later returned to Tasmania to make a documentary film recording the last of the great commercial sailing ships before they disappeared entirely - here's a snippet of that film (external link — footage from the voyage Villiers documented, not included with this book).
Villiers went on to command square-rigged ships in films including Moby Dick, sailed the replica Mayflower II across the Atlantic, and wrote over forty books on sail and the sea.
Lance's biography traces his full career from his Tasmanian years through to his later life in England.
At 307 pages with an index and black and white photographs throughout, this is the standard modern biography of Villiers.
