A pictorial history of the private mining railways and tramways that once served Tasmania's West Coast, including the Mount Lyell Company's Abt Railway between Queenstown and Strahan — which used a Swiss-designed rack-and-pinion system to climb some of the steepest railway gradients in the world, and played a heroic role rushing rescue equipment to the 1912 North Mount Lyell mine disaster — alongside the Emu Bay Railway (Burnie to Zeehan) and the North East Dundas Tramway, which ran the world's first two Garratt articulated locomotives.
