This biography reveals the many faceted life of a colonial doctor on a mission to improve the life of sick and the powerless. From his arrival in Van Diemen's Land in 1833, Dr Edward Swarbreck Hall clashed with his fellow medical practitioners, administrators, politicians and clergy. As a doctor he stood up for convicts, agitated for protection of the general public from infectious diseases and defended Catholics and Catholicism from sectarian attacks.
